Verbal Judo: Diffusing Conflict Through Conversation
Academic-turned-cop and best-selling author George Doc Thompson describes how tactical language allows leaders to achieve their goals. Daniel Ames, the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Associate Professor of Leadership and Ethics, confirms that managing conflict is a critical predictor of leadership success and shows how what works in the streets converges with recent findings in social science. The workshop was part of the Program on Social Intelligences Science Meets Practice series, which pairs hands-on leadership training with breaking insights in psychology research.
Verbal Judo
A big portion of self-defence training should be what happens before you need to use physical force, awareness of dangerous situations, how to avoid them, how to spot the subtle cues before an attack by recognising grooming or verbal escalation rituals, how to destroy an attackers plan by with the right words make him multitask while you are executing your own pre planned and practiced action and be ahead on the OODA loop. This is a subject than many don’t train or even are not aware of its importance. We spend time on this and give our students tools to think about what plan they would choose, how to practice it themselves everyday, find a solution that is congruent with their own moral view.
The Importance of the Pull-Up & the Top 5 Variations
In these days of multi-million dollar gyms, huge equipment manufacturing corporations, the Internet, TV, and the infomercial, it is easy to forget that exercise wasn’t always as complicated as it seems to be now. It really is only in the last 20 years or so that the modern gym as we know it came into existence, and with it the plethora of experts, gurus, and salesman that are always associated with any new industry.

Mosquito trap - No more mosquitos!! Cut the top off a 2 liter bottle. Invert the cone and place it inside the straight part of the bottle. Glue the two pieces together. Add 1 tsp yeast and 1/2 cup sugar to some luke warm water, and pour the mixture into the bottle. Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide that you exhale. The yeast feeds off the sugar and emits the same gas, so the mosquito enters the bottle, thinking she will find food there.
For those who like to train at outdoor camps in the summertime, hate the Mosquito bites here is a cheap low tech solution.

Wellington Megaton Dias - Choke Like Megaton - BJJ Weekly Issue #110
In Megaton's final week he demonstrates a nice choke series from guard. Using your opponents lapel allows you to keep their posture broken and opens up some nice options when your opponent defends. This series is safe and can be used from the closed guard.
Caveman Atlas Stone Workout, My Mad Methods Magazine Dec/Jan 2012
This is my next project, how to build those stones (the difficult part) with a rubber coating (the easy part), to avoid smashing the floor to pieces. This will be the kind of strength training equipment we will have when we get our own gym, no machines or dumbbells, only atlas stones, sandbags, kettlebells, clubbells, ropes and sledgehammer and tire. Our own gym? Yes I am planning to find a permanent gym with one of my best friends and offer several types of martial arts, from every corner of the planet, BJJ (

Libre Fighting Knife Assualt Project Part 1 (knife defense, disarm, mart...
This is the most controversial topic in martial arts, if it’s possible to realistically defend yourself against knife attacks. He argues very well for his point of view, but having pressure tested against all kinds of knife attacks, my own personal experience is that it varies from individual fighting experience. My own fail rate against beginners is 0- max 20%, against very high ranking knife trained martial artist 20-30%. I have had the luck to duel with training blades against Grandmasters and Masters of various FMA systems and never lost in a knife to knife duel, were the rules are simple one head or body hit you loose, get hit on the leg you go down on that leg, get hit on the arm with the blade if you don’t switch hand in a second you loose, if hit on arm or leg any other hit you loose. I have trained with a FMA Master that could not parry 80% of my attacks, he could see them but his structure was so bad that his arm collapsed even if he was a lot stronger than me. Empty hand versus knife is a different game but same mindset, do or die, you need to even more determined to win when you have no equalizer against a knife. Against a person who has the right mindset and skillset armed with a knife, you will loose, the only option is to go all out if you can’t run away.
